The sub-region has been an area of rapid population growth since 1950. The population in 2001 was 130,000,
a 14.5% increase from the previous census in 1996.
The sub-region is a recognised “sunbelt” destination, with 80% of growth resulting from migration. It has a significantly older population than the national average, with consequently lower labour force participation rates, average incomes and spending.

By 2051, the area will be home to 5.2% of the national population (up from 3.4% currently).
As a result, it looks set to become the fourth most populated region in New Zealand. And it’s not just retired people who will be moving here. Projections show that families with young children will make up a large portion of the inward migration.
